Some politicians learned the hard way

The nuts and bolts of redistricting is now technology-driven, featuring staffers armed with sophisticated house-by-house, block-by-block breakdowns of partisan primary voting records. With a mouse click, they can take out any lawmaker out of favor with legislative leaders.

When everybody wants to know if they will be cut in or out of a new map, it's easy to see why the entrance to the top-secret mapping rooms in 2001 required fingerprint access.

Democrats dispute need for more campaign finance limits

SPRINGFIELD - Legislation that would cap legislative leaders' power to give money to candidates in the general election faced scrutiny in a Senate subcommittee Tuesday as Democratic lawmakers questioned why such limits are needed.

Senate Republican leader Christine Radogno, a Lemont Republican, proposed limiting to $200,000 the amount political party committees can give to statewide candidates in the general election. A similar proposal by state Sen. Heather Steins, a Chicago Democrat, would set the limit at $300,000.
