Metra chief on leave as compensation is probed

Metra executive director Phil Pagano has been placed on paid administration leave as the agency looks into allegations of improper conduct.

The action was announced as Metra board members held an emergency session this morning and hired well-known Itasca lawyer James Sotos to conduct an independent investigation into allegations that Pagano received unapproved compensation.

Board Chairwoman Carole Doris said the board had questions about whether procedure and policy were violated.

In March 1973, state Rep. John Alsup, D-Decatur, shrugged off criticism for awarding a legislative scholarship to his 19-year-old daughter. "I grant the scholarships to kids who can't go to school without them," he said. "She's one of them."

It was perfectly legal. It still is. And it would be legal under the so-called reform measure that lawmakers have sent to Gov. Pat Quinn.

Metra director faces scrutiny

The Metra Board of Directors will meet today to determine whether to hire a law firm to investigate fiscal misconduct allegations against longtime Executive Director Phil Pagano.

Pagano, of Crystal Lake, was asked by board Chairwoman Carole Doris late Tuesday not to come to work or conduct Metra business, spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet said. Doris called an emergency meeting for 9 a.m. today regarding what she called “potential financial irregularities” allegedly involving Pagano.
