Cook County assessor gave daughter a $10,000 pay raise

Even as he makes cuts elsewhere, Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios gave his daughter a promotion and $10,000 raise.

And Berrios sees no need to apologize for that.

“She knows the job,” Berrios, who was elected last November, says of his daughter, Vanessa Berrios, who has worked in the assessor’s office since 1999. “We took her out of her old title and put her into a new title.”

Rahm Emanuel's inaugural celebration will be as much about setting a tone for how he wants Chicagoans to perceive his administration as about commemorating his ascendancy to mayor.

The planning team is going for festive, but not too festive. After all, Emanuel enters office preaching the need for shared sacrifice with the city's wallet short by $600 million or more.
 

Is Rahm ready for real reform?

Rahm Emanuel, the mayor-elect, released his 71-page transition team report on Tuesday, establishing a broad-brush scorecard by which he can be judged. Reform is one of his categories.

That’s a good thing.

Moreover, it looks like Emanuel has worked out a deal to cut the number of City Council committees from 19 to 16. And to trim a modest amount of Ald. Ed Burke’s vast power as king of the Council’s Finance Committee.

Those are also good things. But not exactly reform writ large.
 

Daley’s appointees ranged from good to bad to embarrassing

Mayor Daley has been around so long and shuffled the deck of his City Hall cabinet so many times, he was bound to draw some bad hands.

That’s the way it goes when you’re Chicago’s longest serving mayor. Some of your appointees make you look like a genius. Others make you look like a fool. Or even worse, they  embarrass you by resigning in scandal.

Daley has experienced his fair share of good and bad over the last 22 years.
