Illinois State Medical Society

The Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) is a professional organization that represents the interests of over 16,000 physicians. The ISMS legislative agenda is focused on the reform of Illinois medical malpractice laws, especially to cap jury verdicts. They continue to represent physicians, health maintenance organizations, health insurance companies, hospitals and other healthcare professionals in matters pertaining to health care decisions and the regulation of licensed physicians. Donald Udstuen, Legislative Director of ISMS until his April 2002 resignation, pled guilty to charges stemming from the Operations Safe Roads investigation.

The Illinois State Medical Society is a career patron of Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D), Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka (R), Senate President Emil Jones (D), Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson (R), Democratic Party Chair and Speaker of the House Michael Madigan (D), and House Republican Leader Tom Cross (R).

From January 1, 1993 through June 30, 2006 Illinois State Medical Society contributed $8,949,000 to candidates for Illinois statewide constitutional and legislative office, 76% of which went to Republicans.
