Action Alert

The Time to Contact the Governor is NOW-Veto SB3722
SB 3722, which would lift contribution limits in races where SuperPACs are especially active, has been sent to Gov. Quinn. ICPR opposed the bill in the legislature because it removes tools to fight corruption in precisely those races where special interests are most involved. We had urged the legislature to directly address the risks of corruption from giving to SuperPACs. Instead, they took action to remove contribution limits while pledging only to study of the problem until next year.

The day after the bill arrived in the governor's office, the Chicago Tribune featured a front page story on the Supreme Court rulings that gave rise to SuperPACs. It's a great primer for anyone concerned about the role of enormous campaign contributions from private interests. Also last week, the Washington Post noted that Sheldon Adelson, the casino mogul who gave tens of millions to a SuperPAC supporting Newt Gingrich, has now given $10 million to the SuperPAC devoted to Mitt Romney. Contributions of this size have been illegal for over a generation; the risk of corruption should be apparent to anyone, though five members of the US Supreme Court have yet to acknowledge that risk.

ICPR has called on Gov. Quinn to veto the measure, and we have been joined in that call by CHANGE Illinois, and other reform organizations, as well as the Daily Herald, The Rock Island Argus and The Moline Dispatch, and the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Governor now has 60 days to act, though the bill has a July 1 effective date, and because other parts of the bill will take a while to implement, expect action sooner than mid-August. The time to contact Gov. Quinn with your concerns is right now.

What can you do?

Please contact Gov. Quinn and urge him to veto or amendatorily veto SB 3722.

Ask the Governor to Veto SB 3722

Dear Governor Quinn,

I am writing to ask that you veto SB or amendatorily veto 3722.

This plan would tear down part of Illinois' new campaign contribution limits system, which was passed in the wake of a massive corruption scandal.

The removal of contribution limits in elections where Super PACs are active would allow candidates to once again receive the outsized checks which have long had a corrosive influence on our government and the public's faith in it. The legislation would give Super PACs the ability to control the dynamic of Illinois' elections, rather than reduce their influence in our races.

I ask that you reject the portion of SB 3722 which would chip away at our state's campaign finance system. Please veto or amendatorily veto SB 3722.

Sincerely,
