About 70 hours after the polls closed Friday evening, Cook County Clerk David
Orr's office posted 100 percent of the vote on its Web site, confirming the Democratic
sweep of Cook County.
The final combined city and county numbers in the hotly contested race for Cook
County Board president show Democrat Todd Stroger beat Republican Tony Peraica
679,025 to 584,568, or 54 percent to 46 percent.
Peraica held on to his own west suburban seat by a bare 51 percent to 49 percent
margin over Democrat William Gomolinski.
Dem joins review board
The final numbers show Democrat Brendan Houlihan's surprise victory over incumbent
Maureen Murphy for the suburban seat on the Cook County Board of Review widened
to 240,269 to 225,818 or 52 percent to 48 percent. The Republican Legislature
created the seat 10 years ago, hoping to ensure a Republican sat on the board.
Three Democratic judicial candidates running in the north suburban 12th judicial
subcircuit beat their Republican opponents for the first time since the district
was created in 1992. The winners are Mary Kay Rochford, Grace Dickler and Ellen
Flannigan.
Orr and his staff still cannot say for sure what went wrong on election night,
preventing them from counting slightly more than half the votes, even after midnight.
What went wrong?
"We are looking forward to having a panel examine the transmitter tapes,
the transmission records, the computer logs and other data in the cold, hard light
of day to determine the real reasons behind the slow count rather than some of
the misleading speculation that has been published," said Orr spokeswoman
Gail Siegel.
