In 2008, the company changed its name from Ariel Capital Management, Inc. to Ariel Investments, LLC. John W. Rogers, Jr. is the Founder, Chairman, CEO, and Chief Investment Officer of the company. Founded in 1983, Ariel Investments is a privately owned Chicago-based money management firm with 69 employees and $5.4 billion in assets under management as of March 31, 2010. Ariel Investments was also the first African American-owned money management firm in the US, and is the largest African American-owned capital-management company in the world. Roughly 75% of the firm's managed assets have come from the pension funds of government agencies, foundations, public entities, and major corporations like Raytheon and Coca-Cola. Beyond Ariel, Mr. Rogers also currently serves as a board member of Aon Corporation, Exelon Corporation and McDonald’s Corporation. Additionally, he is chairman of the Economic Club of Chicago, a director of the Chicago Urban League, a member of the Board of Directors of The Renaissance Schools Fund (which funds charter schools around Chicago), a trustee of the University of Chicago and a member of the board of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, where he chairs the investment committee. He also served as co-chair for President Barack Obama's Presidential Inaugural Committee 2009 as well as on the Chicago 2016 Olympic Committee. Mellody Hobson is the President of Ariel Investments. She is a nationally recognized speaker on financial literacy and investor education, and director of three public companies: DreamWorks Animation, Estée Lauder and Starbucks. In addition, she serves on the boards of various civic organizations including the Chicago Public Library (and its foundation), The Field Museum, The Chicago Public Education Fund, and the Sundance Institute.
