Open Data and Government Transparency See News

Transparency and disclosure are critical to our campaign and political system because they empower the public with information needed to make informed decisions while also discouraging wrongdoing. A key method to ensure government transparency is through open data.

Open data is based on three core principles:

  • Availability and access
  • Re-use and redistribution
  • Universal participation

Open data is an important part of Illinois’ future, which is why ICPR has undergone multiple efforts to aid the creation and growth of online tools available for public use. ICPR created Illinois Sunshine, a free, state-of-the-art campaign finance portal that keeps track of all political spending and campaign contributions in the state of Illinois. Illinois Sunshine creates transparency by disclosing contributors’ identities, campaign expenditures and total amount of contributions.
