Help Overhaul Illinois’ Redistricting Process!
The Illinois Campaign for Political Reform believes Illinois’ redistricting process – the once-in-a-decade redrawing of representative district boundaries, including state legislative districts – needs an overhaul. In each of the last three decades, one political party has single-handedly drawn the state legislative district maps, without input from the public. As a result, district boundaries have not always been drawn to serve the public’s best interest, but rather, the party’s interest.
ICPR supports the Fair Map Amendment, a ballot initiative headed by the League of Women Voters of Illinois. This proposed Constitutional amendment would take map-making power out of the hands of one party by creating and giving that power to a new bi-partisan commission. The district maps proposed by this commission would be vetted through public meetings, held throughout the state, and districts would have to meet specific criteria, including keeping whole unique populations, such as racial and ethnic groups, when possible.
To make the Fair Map Amendment eligible for voter approval on the November 2010 ballot, we need your help.
The Fair Map Amendment will get on the ballot only if supporters are able to gather an estimated 500,000 signatures from Illinois voters like you. To learn more about the Fair Map Amendment, and how you easily can help this effort, please visit www.ilfairmap.com.
