Illinois officials debate making gun card names public

ROCKFORD — Eric Sonnenberg is a licensed firearms dealer, operating Forest City Firearms out of his Rockford home for the past seven years.

So it’s no secret that he has a firearm owner’s identification card.

But there’s no reason, he said, for the names of all FOID cardholders in Illinois to have their names made public, say Sonnenberg and other area gun dealers and advocates.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office thinks otherwise. Madigan’s public access counselor Matthew Rogina issued a ruling Monday that names of Illinois FOID cardholders should be made public.
