In an op-ed column on this page in September 2009, Scott Fawell complained about the strong-arm tactics the government used in enticing him to testify against former Gov. George Ryan.
Fawell had vowed never to testify against Ryan, his political mentor and friend. He became a government witness only as a means of keeping his fiancée from facing prison time. He believed threatening action against his girlfriend to force his testimony went beyond the bounds of responsible prosecution and warned that anyone could be the next victim of what he saw as bullying.
