The major candidates for Illinois governor, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Republican state Sen. Bill Brady, released new, sharply contrasting television campaign ads Thursday.

Quinn focuses on his opponent, tying him to the gun violence that produces tragic headlines almost daily in Chicago. Brady focuses on himself, presenting a sunny but vague picture of what he would do as governor.
In stark terms, the ad tries to do two things: tie Brady to gun violence and plant the idea that Brady is a potentially risky unknown.

The ad opens with images of a gun. “This is a deadly semi-automatic assault weapon. It’s not used to hunt ducks or deer. It’s used to hunt people — and kill them,” the narrator says as the chalk outline of a body appears.
