Isn't it time voters mattered more than money?

Top Donors to Date

The General Election is a contest among candidates, but candidates aren’t the only ones with something at stake in the outcome. Many deep-pocketed contributors give to candidates in the hopes that, if victorious, those candidates might remember who helped them out when they needed help. Looking across all candidates, here’s a list of the top donors since the last Semi-Annual reports were filed as of 1 am last night. (For a list of top donors through the last Semi-Annual reports, click here)

The top donor is a new player in Illinois. The Institute for Legal Reform has made two contributions in Illinois; the first was a $575,000 check to the Illinois Republican Party and, within a week of receiving that check, the Party spent $567,125 on TV ads for 5th District Appellate Court candidate Stephen McGlynn. The second was an $800,000 check to the Illinois Republican Party which came in yesterday; bonus points if you can guess if the Party will spend that on ads for their gubernatorial candidate or on the 5th District Appellate Court seat. Likewise, the American Justice Partnership is a DC-based business group which gave directly to McGlynn. The others will likely be familiar to people familiar with Illinois politics. (and yes, the two teachers unions have given $2.4 million since July 1)

This list excludes the two main parties, the three main legislative caucus PACs, and the four legislative leaders. They’ve given a lot, but as legislators themselves, their presence doesn’t say much about what they might want from giving, aside from winning and retaining their leadership posts.
